Religion – A Poem by Ann Kestner

Religion

Letting Good Friday pass
through me like a stranger’s
confession slipping from the
box out into the unforgiving
streets…

…the voice can only
set the sin free.

Mother said he died for me
but I could always see that
cross upon her shoulder
and her bended knee.

The Night’s Opera – A Poem by Ann Kestner

The Night’s Opera

The light leaves even the garden
temporarily. Leaves the earth

as a great shaded stage for
the night’s opera to be performed
starring Owl and Cricket with
the sky its devoted audience of eyes.

It is always a tragedy
full of dark and desperate survival.
But it is a ballet that makes
the barbaric look beautiful.

At dawn the sun applauds
and waits all day for
an encore.

Wrong Place to Go – A Poem by Ann Kestner

Wrong Place to Go

Her hands are always open
they cannot hold.
For a boy forever falling
you should know there’s
better places to go.

The Note – A Poem by Ann Kesnter

The Note

Folded neatly, square, and
tapped finger to shoulder
to finger again, from the
back seat silently to the
front of the room – Unfolded
it said, “Here I am.”
